This week in the shop has been all about building better systems. The product that makes the product is often overlooked, and I like getting mired in the details sometimes. Updating the CNC with known positions and fixture setups make repeatable operations much faster and more accurate. It’s one of those upgrades that may not look exciting from the outside, but it creates a smoother workflow and opens the door for more consistency as new products and custom orders come through the shop.
I’ve also been testing custom 3D printed vacuum hold-down chucks, which has been a fun challenge. There’s still some fine tuning to be done, but early results are promising and should allow for an expanded range of carving possibilities. Coupled with the fixturing plates, these fixtures should enable much more complex forms from CAD.
On the product side, I recently received a custom order of Rebel Loons, and I made a few extras while everything was set up. Those additional loons will be available in the shop in very limited quantities soon, so keep your eyes peeled.
